Care and Maintaince

Caring for Your Suit

Taking good care of your suit can greatly extend the life of it. There are many ways to take of your suit this is brief guide on the methods we recommend.

Basic Care
  • Brush before and after use or storage. We recommend using a slicker brush.

  • When at Conventions or other Events use alcohol based disinfectant spray. We recommend Soap Pony spray products for these situations they can be found on Etsy and Twitter.

  • DISINFECTANT SPRAY IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROPER WASHING!

  • Avoid things that will be hard to wash out, will stain, or damage the suit.

  • What you wear under the suit can greatly affect the longevity of the suit. We recommend Under Armour TYPE clothing this will help keep you cool, as well as keep sweat and oils away from the suit.

  • This goes for your head as well, we recommend using a balaclava to help keep sweat out of the head.

  • For traveling and storage avoid leaving in hot areas this can cause deformities and can loosen glued areas.

  • Be sure to stay hydrated, and stay vigilante of your heat levels in suit.

  • Do NOT use strong chemicals or cleaners on your suit, this will cause damage over time, and shorten the life of the suit.

  • We recommend getting a fan to dry out your suit parts after cleaning or use.

Deep Cleaning

After 2-3 heavy uses or a large event we recommend washing your suit fully. If you are heavy sweater wash your suit more often. There are many different ways to wash your suit, this is how we do it.

Washing Heads Recommended Way

  • This method requires an Little Green Machine (Link Provided Below)

  • Follow the instructions provided with your machine but only a 1/2 teaspoon of laundry detergent instead of the carpet cleaner soap.

  • Go over the entire head with the cleaning attachment inside and out. (Heavily soiled areas may need more than one pass, such as the neck and chin).

  • Rinse the clean water tank, refill with hot water and go over the entire head inside and out with the cleaning attachment.

  • Repeat until satisfied, making sure to get any remaining soap residue out. Any soap left in any faux fur can cause damage to the faux fur over time.

  • Set up in a well ventilated area with a fan, make sure the head is fully dry to prevent any mold growth.

Washing Machine Method (Front Loaders or Agitatorless Washers Only)

  • Handpaws can be put in the washer on the cold delicate cycle, in some sort of laundry bag or pillow case to avoid being crushed or extra wear on the fur, can be washed with other things as well.

  • Bodys can be washed in the machine as well, on a cold and delicate cycle. If your suit has padding be sure to remove it before washing and flip the body inside out. (Feet must be washed in their own load).

  • Repeat the same process with feet paws, the reason we tell you to wash them separately is because dirt and debris coming off the feet can get into the other parts making washing exponentially harder. Be sure to destuff them before washing.

  • Laundry Detergent works just fine, we don’t recommend using fabric soften due to the fact that over time it can loosen the back of the fur.

  • If the polyfil has gotten dirty put in in a pillow case, tie it off tightly, and wash normally. I can be put in the dryer on meduim. Poyfil does bunch over time, simply pull apart to fluff it back up, if that isn't working it is time to be replaced. Polyfil can be bought at most major craft stores, and some walmarts.

  • For anything you can't flip inside out, place in a laundry bag or pillow case to protect these items, feet excluded.

  • NEVER hang any sopping wet part, this can cause the fibers to stretch out. Use the machine's spin cycle to spin out excess water.

  • As it dries, thoroughly brush and fluff it out every hour or at least twice while it is still moist, allowing your suit to dry unbrushed can lead to matting.

Tub Method

  • To wash the head in the tub fill it up a few inches depending on your head size, place the head in the water face up. Then use a sponge or wash rag to wipe down the face, ears, and neck. If soap is used only use the smallest amount, we can't stress this enough. Any soap left in the head can cause damage to the fur and skin irritation on the face.

  • Soak the body, tail and hand paws, (do feet separately), in a tub of cold water, it doesn't have to be freezing just not overly warm.

  • Use your hands with a little soap to work the sweat and dirt out of the suit, be sure to go over the main sweat areas such as the arm pits.

  • Drain the water, then rinse clean by either running shower over it or filling and draining the tub till it drains clean.

  • Never use heat on your costume. We do not recommend using the dryer even on the no heat setting.

  • Repeat the same process with feet paws, the reason we tell you to wash them separately is because dirt and debris coming off the feet can get into the other parts making washing exponentially harder.

  • Never hang any sopping wet part, this can cause the fibers to stretch out. Lay out in a clean area where it can dry enough to hang up.

  • As it dries, thoroughly brush and fluff it out every 20 minutes, allowing your suit to dry unbrushed can lead to matting.

Storage
  • Always hang right side out for hang storage, or lightly fold for box storage.

  • Never store your suit unless it is completely dried

  • Never store anything on top of any part of the suit.

  • Do not store the suit in direct sunlight or in a damp location.

Wear
  • Fursuits are clothing they do wear out over time, this is normal. If you’re rough on your costume like doing activities like dancing and sports you’ll be prone to friction matting and holes.

  • This isn’t a quality problem, but just normal wear.

  • Costumes with lots of markings like stripes and spots will be more prone to holes and tears. This is not a problem. We can repair them or we can show you how to. Please do NOT be scared to email us!

  • Anything else you’re concerned about message us! We are friendly and can set you on the right direction or fix the problem.
